Modern interventional radiology addresses the diagnosis and treatment of solid tumours via image-guided minimally invasive procedures. However, the local and systemic immune response that occurs is not currently considered in the selection or monitoring of the therapies delivered.

Research in this field into the natural, biological response of the patient to the treatment applied in each case will enable both an optimal choice of therapy and the prognostic character for the success of the therapy. Analyses of cellular factors in the context of therapies will enable a paradigm shift from palliative to curative tumour therapy using minimally invasive image-guided procedures.

The innovative focus on patient-specific therapy to activate the body's own cancer defences will elevate the Magdeburg site to scientific excellence.
